South East set to benefit from $49m road upgrade

Major construction for the $49 million upgrade of Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road in Narre-Warren South and Cranbourne North has moved one step closer with the construction contract awarded to Winslow Constructors.

Premier Denis Napthine said the upgrade of Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road between Pound Road and Thompson Road, which is expected to start by the end of the year, would improve access, safety and traffic flow along the important arterial road.

“This major investment in Melbourne’s South East will extend the duplication of Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road from Ernst Wanke Road north of the Monash Freeway to Thompson Road, Cranbourne East,” Dr Napthine said.

“Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road is an important link for residents and businesses in the area and this section carries around 29,000 vehicles each day and has had 52 casualty crashes in the 5 years to December 2012.

“This upgrade will deliver safer and less congested conditions for drivers along Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road with three lanes each way between Ormond Road and Glasscocks Road and two lanes each way for the other sections between Pound Road and Thompson Road.

“Intersection upgrades at Ormond Road and Glasscocks Road and new traffic signals at Rosebank Drive will also help people access residential and commercial areas more safely and easily.

Minister for Public Transport and Roads Terry Mulder said that while motorists would benefit enormously from the $49 million investment, the Coalition was also investing in improved conditions for cyclists and pedestrians.

“A new shared path for cyclists and pedestrians along the east side of Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road will improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists and improve facilities in this lively area.

“The South Eastern Suburbs are among the fastest growing in Melbourne and as more people and businesses move into Melbourne’s South Eastern Suburbs it is important that we continue to invest in better roads to service these communities.

The Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road Upgrade will provide a number of benefits including:

  • safer conditions for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians;
  • less congestion with better traffic flow for all road users, including active traffic signal priority for bus services;
  • improved amenity for local residents, including the provision of an off-road shared pedestrian and bicycle path;
  • better and safer access to adjacent shops, facilities and residential areas; and
  • improved transport efficiency in the South East growth area of Melbourne.

Work is expected to start by the end of 2013 and finish in 2015.
